RE: Recipe /Offerings for 8/20/08

Thanks Karl. The Cajun Seafood Pasta looks like a real winner. There are "Word Docs" on my desktop titled "Karl's 1" and "Karls 2".
Thanks for sharing thes great recipes.

RE: Propane Heaters in a Tent

I've used them in tents in the past and won't hesitate to do so again.
Don't go to sleep with them lit and don't light them in the morning to "take the chill off" if you're one who likes to doze rather than jump out of "bed". A propane lantern puts out about as much heat as the small Colemans. When the temperatures are in the low 20's I'll use both!
One of the by producs of burning propane is water vapor, so be careful your tent doesn't get too damp just from trying to heat it.

RE: how /what do you cook while camping

...Also thanks for the tip about the non glazed tile for the oven... Angie
Non glazed or glazed- doesn't make any difference. The glazed is easier to clean any drips from. Make sure there is a space all the way around so heat can circulate.
I eat "better" :) and take more time cooking while camping than at home. One of the first dinners I make is Fettuccini Alfredo. I often find recipes here and other places and have the time to leisurely make then in the campground. I also do stuff in foil, eat burgers and hotdogs and more "normal" camp foods.
Some folks are here for good tasting fast meals- their main camping interest lies in other activities. For some cooking and eating is often the major activity. But I think everybody is looking for good taste and easy cleanup.
I recently bought my first pie iron but forgot it on my last trip (heck I remembered the heavy cream and Parmigiano Reggiano :B). I unscrewed the pie iron's handles to make it easy to season in the oven at home.

RE: Needed Easy Garlic Sauce Recipe

Or how about the ultimate in simple:
4-5 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped or crushed.
--1 tsp water added to garlic to make a wet puree- optional, from Cook's magazine- if you tend to burn garlic this helps--
1/3 Cup olive oil
1/2- 1 Tsp salt
Combine in cold pan and cook over low heat until garlic is golden. Pour over pasta and toss. Add salt, pepper and pamesean cheese as desired.
Additions to oil-
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 -3/4 cup finely chopped nuts- peanuts don't go too well here
2 Tbl drained capers
A couple chopped anchovie fillets (or a "squirt" of paste :D )
Half a dozen large green olives chopped
A squirt of tomato paste in the tube.
You can also toss the pasta with almost any fresh or dried herbs. A couple tablspoons of basalmic vinegar also works real well. Or lemon zest :).

RE: Zucchini Alfredo

Thanks Star,
That looks very good. Anything with "alfredo" in the name starts my mouth watering before I open the post.
Merrykalia, that's a great idea. It would work with about any sauce.
In my area zuccini hasn't dropped a great deal in price like last year so folks only seem to buy the smaller really tender ones at farmer's/flea markets. But the larger ones (say, well over 12") are at last years prices or even free. Some vendors throw in a large zuke when when you buy a "container" of the smaller ones.
For Star and Merrykalia: I'm assuming you peel and... de-seed the zuccini first?

RE: Beef Stroganoff Help

...PS, I always add the sour cream while it's cooking and let the flavor mix in with the soup and have NEVER had it curdle.
I've never had a problem either. That recipe is pretty similar to mine. My ex didn't like paprika and I forgot all about adding it.
Good thread. Thanks all!

RE: Since we're on the topic, peeled or not?

Potato peelings are rich in vitamin B6 and B12-antioxidents.
And they taste really good fried in bacon fat. :B

Cold potato salad is about the only time I peel them. The reds I wouldn't though.
Hot?... depends on the recipe, the potato, and how I feel at the time.

RE: Linux for Older Laptop

Thanks again.
When following one of the links posted here through the links listed there (and so on) I stumbled into Panasonic's Canadian site. So last night I downloaded a new driver for my CD drive (apparently a common problem) and a manual!!
For others who might be looking for weird stuff, keep looking around. Panasonic's sites in England and New Zealand are supposed to be the best for old downloads. Neither had what I needed- or didn't list it in any recognizable form.
This is already fun! :B Maybe the library after work! :B :B

RE: Linux for Older Laptop

Thanks everyone, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I've got my search narrowed and some sites to browse through. I really like free but there were so many :). Next time I'm at the library (dial up at home :( ) I'll download a few linux versions.
I had also thought of DOS. I started with it... worked good on a 286 too. Naw, I'll save that for a TRS-80 :B
Funny using it as a car PC came up... I had to try it right away- heck, $7.00 is sorta pricey for laptop! I turned it on in my truck and I could actually SEE the display. Much better than my HP Pavillion. ...and I saw several gps programs free for download...:B
One more question-
On the back there is a port labeled "AT BUS". I'd thought it was a SCSI port, I don't have a connector to try, but there's no SCSI controller built in. Is this some kind of a proprietary expansion dock doohickey or a normal thing I just haven't noticed before? There seems to be plenty of pins for AT slot and hardware lists a 3Com "Modem PC Card" in addition to the Hayes PCMCIA modem.

RE: Tater Salad

...What I have also found is that everyone likes it a little different.
Thanks Texlawdawg,
Never thought of ranch dressing- or chopped green onions either. Those are two to remember. Everybody does make it a bit different- most are pretty darned good.
I do use bacon sometimes- it adds a lot to the salad.
I usually use pickles too- either sweet relish or chopped up dill pickles and the hardboiled eggs. Two other ideas are a little sour cream (goes nicely with the mayo, bacon fat and eggs :D ) and some sliced black olives.

Linux for Older Laptop

I picked up a Panasonic CF-41 with 16 MB Ram (maybe expandable to 32MB) and an 80486 processor (and VGA!!). I'm not sure, I think it originally came with WIN95 but currently has WIN98- the CD drive isn't recognized. I still need to figure out if its a Mark 1 or whatever.
Anyway, I finished playing with an older desktop and WIN98 (had a lot of fun with it- it worked good- gave it, a monitor and a printer away). Onward and... well, sideways ;)
In researching my lastest treasure, I keep seeing linux, tuxedos, and red party hats mentioned. :@ I don't really know much about them. I could leave WIN98 on it or try WIN98SE but... never used linux.
I've bookmarked-
www.linspire.com/
www.easy-ubuntu-linux.com/
www.linuxmint.com/
From quick looks, these OS's appear too advanced for my machine. I MIGHT upgrade memory- but LOL! 32MEG!! LOL! Any recommendations for which of the multitude of linux versions might be best?
How about a linux message board with good FAQ's and back posts? ...maybe a linux for dummies type thing. My searches have only turned up "dead" boards or total "techie" sites. If anyone has experience with the CF-41, I would really appreciate it.
Bob
PS: I'm on a 2 year old laptop w/ XP. I don't need another real computer. The Panasonic is a for fun project. It is not required that it make sense. When it works and I'm done, I'll probably give it away and find a....???? :B

RE: Camping alone (not to be confused with the other topic)

Go For It! It might feel a little different at first but its... peaceful. I find it really nice.
My wife, now ex-wife ( :) :D :B :B ), never would camp. So I'm used to it. I see very few other singles who camp. This past weekend (not too busy) the closest thing to another single was a Mom with two little ones. And of course there were the ubiquitous "two guys in a pop-up" with 40 cases of beer (I'm too old for that :( ).

RE: Lots of tent campers in Ohio SP

I've noticed more tenters this year too. Even at private campgrounds. In thecampground I was in this past weekend, there was one Class A, one pop-up, and half a dozen tents along with the permanent/seasonal trailers.

RE: Kitchen knives

Wondering how many of you would take advantage of a quality knife sharpening service in your travels if one were available in the camp ground or RV park?
"Quality" is the thing. Most sharpeners, when you can find them, aren't very good. I would certainly try a guy once- just not with anything too valuble. For knives, repeat business is maybe a once a year thing though...
Just running them across a Foley Belsaw Sharpall won't "cut" (ouch :o) it. There's a definate skill involved.
Sharpening other cutting tools is a plus. Some carpenters still use hand tools. I have to drive over an hour each way for a reasonable sawsharp so right now I do my own. If I'm working in his neighborhood for a while, I do drop a few off.

RE: Lodge Factory Store in TN

I think they have a message board too (??). Maybe Lodge has a "forum member's day" at the outlet store. :B
I'm sitting out front of the Kitchen Aid Experience store right now on wifi. They open at noon, various activities starting around then, KA arrainged a history/ demo presentationn for us at 2 PM and a factory tour tomorrow. Also free Logo'ed Polo shirts!
Forum members are getting together tonight for dinner too.
If you're in the area, Wildcat Woods is a nice campgroung about 8 miles outside Greenville (OH). Reasonablly priced (heck, I'm there :E), clean, quiet and pet friendly.
For those "into" Lodge products, go for it. If Lodge doesn't do that- suggest it!

RE: internet search engines that work?

...Flash has become so widely used that FF has several add-ons to block it from running. When you hit a page that contains a flash ad, all you will see is the SF (shockwave flash) circle indicator but the ad wont play unless you click it to view...
Do you mean stuff like "Macro Media Flash Player" or the "Adobe Flash Player" (might be the same company now)? Or are there are worse things I haven't run into... yet? :E
I don't download the "players"- haven't checked for years but much of the Macro Media stuff was listed as spyware. The only add ons I have are a couple (java) from Sun Microystems. All the the other garbage is disabled or deleted. I don't allow most (or any I know about) of the active-X stuff to run either.
So far, with XP, I' pretty much free of pop-ups. A few get through but..
